Science in the City 2025

Valletta’s Biggest Science Party is Back! 🎉🔬

This September, Valletta is turning into one giant science playground. Science in the City 2025 — Powered by the People is back, and it’s bigger, bolder, and bursting with creativity. Think of it as Malta’s ultimate mash-up of science, art, culture, and fun — where streets transform into labs, theatres into lecture halls, and historic squares into interactive playgrounds.

And here’s the best part? It’s completely free.

What’s the Buzz About? 🐝

On 26–27 September 2025, the heart of Valletta will be buzzing with energy. From the Triton Fountain to Sala San Duminku, you’ll stumble across hands-on experiments, live performances, interactive workshops, art installations, and brain-stretching talks.

But this isn’t your typical science fair. Science in the City is built “by the people, for the people.” Local communities, artists, NGOs, researchers, and students have all rolled up their sleeves to co-create this year’s festival. The result? A celebration that feels less like a lecture and more like a festival you want to be at.

Can’t Wait Until Then? The Pre-Festival Fun Starts Early! 🎨🧬

The countdown to Science in the City kicks off with pre-festival events across Malta (30 August – 25 September). These pop-ups are like appetizers before the main feast:

  • 🏰 Using Science to Unravel the Past (30 Aug, Fort St Angelo) – Watch archaeology come alive with object scanning and bone analysis.
  • 🧠 SARA and BRIAN’s Brains (3 Sep, VDC) – A family-friendly session featuring jelly brain models and real brain dissections for kids aged 6+.
  • 🍽️ From Lab to Table (4 Sep, VDC & online) – Bust food myths and learn what science really says about what’s on your plate.
  • 📜 Read our Past, Write a Better Future (11 Sep, Notarial Archives) – Get hands-on with history and see how archives can shape the future.
  • 🌍 Flashbacks from a Fragile Planet (18 Sep, Argotti Gardens) – Explore Earth’s climate story in one of Malta’s most beautiful gardens.
  • 🧬 Analysing the X and Y of the Maltese (15 Sep, VDC) – Dive into DNA with your own hands-on extraction experiment.
  • 🌐 Exploitation and Human Trafficking in Malta (22 Sep, APS Hub) – An important discussion on a critical social issue.
  • 🎭 AI Meets the Arts (25 Sep, VDC) – A cultural clash of creativity and artificial intelligence.

And trust us — this is just a taste. There’ll be workshops, installations, and interactive exhibitions like Memory Makers and Changing Tides to keep curiosity levels sky-high.

More Than Just a Festival 🌟

Science in the City isn’t just about fun (though there’s plenty of that). It’s about bridging the gap between science and society. It’s about showing that science isn’t locked away in labs — it’s all around us, shaping the way we live, work, and dream.

From climate change and heritage preservation to AI and neuroscience, this year’s program is packed with topics that matter. And the best part? You don’t need a PhD to join the conversation.

A Festival With Incredible Support 💙

Science in the City 2025 wouldn’t be possible without its amazing partners. Co-funded by the EU’s Horizon Europe programme (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions), and organized by the University of Malta and the Malta Chamber of Scientists, it’s powered by a community of collaborators who believe in making science accessible. The festival is also part of European Researchers’ Night and proudly recognized by Europe for Festivals (EFFE).

As proud sponsors of Science in the City 2025, we at The Embassy Valletta Hotel are thrilled to support this celebration of science, art, and community. Located just steps away from the festival’s main events, our hotel is right at the heart of Valletta’s cultural and social life. Supporting Science in the City is our way of giving back to the community, championing creativity, and helping bring people together for experiences that truly matter.

Tips to Make the Most of Science in the City 📝

Why You Shouldn’t Miss It 🚀

Imagine strolling through Valletta, gelato in one hand, suddenly bumping into a live DNA extraction demo, or finding yourself painting on a giant community canvas. Imagine discovering history through virtual reality, or laughing while learning how jelly brains explain memory.

That’s Science in the City: a festival where learning is exciting, community is at the center, and everyone leaves with a spark of curiosity.

So mark your calendars: 26–27 September 2025. Valletta. Free. Fun. Fascinating.

See you there! 👩‍🔬✨
