The water stretches out toward Sliema and Manoel Island, catching the light differently at every hour of the day. It is the backdrop to countless sunsets, photographs, and memories made by our guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what lies beneath the surface tells a different story. Like harbours across the Mediterranean, Marsamxett accumulates debris over time \u2014 glass, metal, plastic, discarded fishing equipment, and general waste that sinks to the seabed and slowly degrades the marine environment. Most of it is invisible from shore. Out of sight, and for most people, out of mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We decided that was not good enough. Most recently, members of our team headed out to the Marsamxett waterfront to work alongside the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=100081291955824\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=100081291955824\">Coast is Clear Foundation<\/a><\/strong> and their volunteer divers on a harbour clean-up operation. While the divers worked underwater to dislodge and collect submerged debris from the harbour floor, our staff supported from land \u2014 hauling bags of waste out of the water, sorting collected materials, and helping to ensure everything was properly disposed of or recycled. The amount of waste pulled from a harbour that looks perfectly clean from the surface was a genuine eye-opener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Marsamxett Matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marsamxett is not just any stretch of water. It is one of two natural harbours that define Valletta&#8217;s geography, separating the capital from Sliema, G\u017cira, and Manoel Island. It is used daily by ferry services, recreational boats, and fishing vessels. Its health directly affects the marine life, water quality, and visual character of one of the most historically significant harbours in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When waste accumulates on the seabed \u2014 glass bottles, metal fragments, discarded netting, plastic bags \u2014 it does not simply sit there. It breaks down into smaller particles, leaches chemicals into the water, and damages the habitats of the fish, crustaceans, and marine plants that depend on a clean environment. The harbour is right there, just beyond our walls, and it felt wrong to talk about sustainability while the water below us was quietly filling with debris. Working with Coast is Clear gave us a way to extend our environmental commitment beyond the hotel and into the natural environment that surrounds it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not a sponsorship badge or a logo on a banner. It is people in the water, pulling waste off the seabed, bag by bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Coast is Clear Foundation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Coast is Clear Foundation<\/strong> is a Maltese environmental NGO dedicated to preserving the island&#8217;s coastlines, marine habitats, and rural spaces. Founded by <strong>Mark Galea Pace<\/strong> and registered as a voluntary organisation (VO\/2406), Coast is Clear brings together teams of volunteer divers, snorkellers, kayakers, and land-based volunteers to carry out organised clean-up operations across Malta and Gozo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The foundation&#8217;s track record speaks for itself.
