The Floriana Granaries, also known as “Il-Grenarji,” were built during the 17th and 18th centuries. Their strategic location, close to Valletta, Malta’s capital city, made them an essential part of the island’s food distribution network. These large, vaulted chambers served as grain stores, where farmers stored their harvested crops, ensuring a steady supply of food for the population.
During the era of the Knights of St. John, Malta faced the constant threat of invasions and sieges. The Floriana Granaries played a crucial role in safeguarding the island’s food reserves, providing sustenance during times of conflict and hardship.
Today, the Floriana Granaries have transformed into a vibrant cultural space where numerous festivals, concerts, and events take center stage.
