St. Paul’s Catacombs

Dating back to the Roman period, St. Paul’s Catacombs hold a profound historical significance as a testament to Malta’s multicultural heritage. Named after the apostle Paul, who is believed to have been shipwrecked on the island in AD 60, these catacombs served as burial grounds for both Christians and non-Christians alike. This unique coexistence of different funerary practices reflects the diverse cultural and religious influences that have shaped Malta’s history.

The catacombs provide a window into ancient customs, beliefs, and rituals, giving visitors an opportunity to connect with the people who once sought solace in these underground sanctuaries.
